RED STAR by Charles Wood

November 17, 2005 through December 18, 2005

RED STAR is set in 1951 Moscow. The 'dregs' of the Red Army form a theatrical troupe to stage a politically correct version of "JULIUS CAESAR" with dire consequences. One of the Actors drunkenly imitates Stalin and is promptly shipped off to the Gulag, until a Russian Movie Director needs a young 'Stalin' for his next picture. "RED STAR" is variously described as a play about apathy, authoritarian government, celebrity and ill-fitting togas...

This is the U.S.PREMIERE of "RED STAR" by Charles Wood, who also wrote the Beatles' Movie HELP, the Oscar-nominated IRIS, THE KNACK, HOW I WON THE WAR and many others. The play was originally staged at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Director David Payne ("The Draughtsman’s Contract") and Wood first worked together on the original production of Charles' play "VETERANS" at the Royal Court Theatre in London, starring Sir John Gielgud and Sir John Mills.

"John Osborne has always been credited with
changing the course of drama with
Look Back in Anger but I would say
it was Charles Wood who has been
responsible for the theatrical revolution"
